For Directions To Worthy Plants
Will we ever feel the breath of a gentle warm southerly breeze? The cold winds with that easterly influence have slowed down plant growth, but the winds will ease, and plants will race away with a surprising energy. I have ensured there is a good range of shrubs and trees in stock and I am steadily amassing the range of perennials. Even now, though, there are some lovely pulmonarias and dicentras already flowering, a welcome sight. It just shows how tough they are. Among the trees available are flowering cherries in some number, and various good performers for the small garden, including amelanchier, exochorda, hawthorns, magnolias and birches.
Although the bare root season is finishing, there is still time to plant root-balled trees and shrubs, perhaps for hedging, and containerised stock, of course, will get away strongly while the soil is damp, and warming up. We don’t feel the warmth yet, but plants are tougher than we are, and far better for them to be in the ground than in pots. Grab the chance when it is dry to get into the garden and make a start. It IS worth it!
There is a brand new service available to visitors to Worthy Plants.
Every Wednesday morning in the garden centre Philip will be hosting:
'Plants and Plantsmanship'.
During the morning he will be at his table in the centre to answer questions and perhaps demonstrate some practical skills for those wishing to learn.
There will be a topic each week, however, this is a great opportunity for people to get involved, air their views, try new skills, and, hopefully, get answers from a real expert about anything horticulture related.
So why not come along each Wednesday. Philip will also be available to visitors on Friday and Saturday mornings, so pop by. He looks forward to seeing you then.
